A lesson looking at the complex issue of gender identity

Why do we need to teach young people about trans identities? There are several reasons for this:

Young people (and society at large) are learning a new language associated with trans identities which are becoming more visable and represented in society.

Young people want to understand, and our student voice survey 'How Are You?' consistently shows that secondary aged students want more LGBTQ+ content in their PSHE lessons.

It is also important that young people understand what transphobia is or isn't so they're fully informed when they go out into the wider world and do not inadvertantly fall foul of the Equality Act through lack of thought.

Trans students or those who may be questioning need to feel included, and be signposted to sources of support. Their classmates need to be empathetic towards them.

Understanding trans identities can be confusing for some young people, who may confuse gender atypical behaviors and other differences with being trans, so it's important to clarify any misconceptions around this.
