What do I include in a lesson about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in secondary school?

Ages 13-14 : Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

This pack can also be used with older students. DfE guidance states "Knowledge about safer sex and sexual health remains important to ensure that young people are equipped to make safe, informed and healthy choices as they progress through adult life." (DfE Relationships, Sex and Health Education, p25). Many teachers find the subject of STIs challenging as it requires accurate and up-to-date subject knowledge as well as a degree of confidence to deliver it effectively. This pack aims to tackle both these issues with activities (and teacher notes) that give information about the transmission, diagnosis and treatment of STIs and safe sex practises.

This pack contains the following activities:

  • Who has a STI?
  • Most to least common STI
  • STI true or false?
  • STI matching exercise (transmission, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment)
  • STIs - what's the risk?
  • STI scenarios (prevention)
  • STI memory check
