How do I teach discernment about social media use as part of PSHE and Citizenship in school?

Ages 14-16 : Can you become too reliant on social media?

It's a fact of life that young people engage with social media as a significant part of their communication with others, but how do we teach about being a discerning online consumer without sounding 'old fashioned' or 'unrealistic'. This teaching pack seeks to explore different aspects of social media use including screen time, fake news, manipulation and social media 'dependency'. The activities are varied and can be used in a wide variety of timetabled slots e.g. tutor time, a timetabled PSHE curriculum slot or as a workshop during a 'drop-down day'. The PowerPoint is fully editable allowing you to customise the activities to your students.

This pack contains the following activities:

  • Screen time
  • App attack!
  • Social media positives and negatives
  • Social media 'dependency'
  • The manipulative world of social media
  • Social media challenge- can you live without it?
