How do I teach my students about relationship change and loss?

We recommend the activities in this pack are not combined into a discrete lesson, but instead mixed and matched with other packs in your Chameleon PDE library subscription such as those in the "Relationships" and "Emotional & Mental Health" themes. The rationale for this is to avoid students facing a relentless parade of potentially upsetting topics in one lesson. Although the pack primarily focuses on some impacts of relationship loss, the Take 30 Activity is a short suicide prevention training course. This is covered in a pack for ages 16-18, but we also felt it was an important addition for students of a slightly younger age.

Due to the very sensitive nature of this topic we would urge special care and consideration is given to the individuals in your cohort. If you are aware of students who have had particularly adverse experiences in relation to suicide / bereavement/ mental health we would advise speaking to them in advance of the lesson to ensure they are happy to participate. The following activities may include language and themes that some students may also find triggering or upsetting. Please note that every care has been taken to try and address these topics in a safe and sensitive way. It's a myth that talking about suicide puts ideas into people's heads, instead it's preventative and breaks down stigma and taboos around this important topic (see www.papyrus-uk.org).
