Ages 14-16 : Helping a friend or relative who is struggling to cope
These materials consider the implications for supporting a friend (or relative) with a mental health issue. Students are particularly asked to consider how they would manage their own wellbeing if placed in this situation. Helping a friend with unhealthy coping strategies such a self-harm, substance misuse and eating disorders are also discussed. There is also an activity that helps students prepare for an emergency situation should this happen, such as a friend threatening to take their own life. A scenario focusing on PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) and mental health is included and where support can be accessed if students are struggling with these conditions. There are a minimum 0f 120 minutes of teaching activity choices. A fully editable PowerPoint is also included, as is a carefully written and appropriate home learning resource.
