Is parenting a part of compulsory PSHE in school?

Ages 13-14 : Family diversity

From September 2020, Relationships education is mandatory in English schools, aligning it with other UK nations. The statutory DfE Relationships, Sex and Health Education guidance states that 'the roles and responsibilities of parents with respect to raising of children, including the characteristics of successful parenting' should be included within lessons about relationships. It is challenging to make this interesting and relevant for pupils who are many years away from being parents themselves. This pack in our resource library helps you teach about family roles and responsibilities, and family diversity through a range of activity choices which you can select from that best suit your pupils' learning styles. Care has also been taken to ensure the activities are inclusive of LGBTQ+ families and those from different cultural or faith backgrounds.

This pack contains the following activities:

  • Different types of family
  • Marriage debate
  • What's best for the children?
  • Personal beliefs about families
  • Life goals and family influence
  • Parenting, when, what how?
  • Promoting family diversity
